dementia is a general term for symptoms including loss of thoughts and reason, mental imbecility, idiocy while Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of presenile dementia that usually starts in the 40s to 50s, first symptoms are impaired memory loss which is followed by impaired thoughts and speech and finally complete helplessness.
